Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide
We install HeatShield chimney caps in Fort Worth, and a typical HeatShield cap replacement runs $275 – $425 installed, depending on flue size, roof access, and whether the old cap is rusted in place or spins off clean. We carry the common HeatShield lid sizes on the truck, so most jobs are done in one trip. You’ll usually discover this part has failed one of two ways: you see a rusty, leaning, or missing cap from the yard, or you hear it rattling on windy nights when the metal has separated from the base. Rain damage to the flue is what pushes the fix from “someday” to “this week.”
Hank Delano puts it plainly on the roof: if the cap is not sitting square and sealed, the flue is taking on water every time it rains. In Fort Worth, that means water on the smoke shelf, damp firebox smells in summer, and eventual spalling (flaking) of the brick at the crown. The cap is cheaper than the repair it prevents.
Which HeatShield Models This Applies To
HeatShield makes a few distinct cap lines, and the wrong lid will not seat. The two you’ll most often see on Fort Worth homes are the standard single-flue cap with a slip-in base and the top-mount cap used with multi-flue applications. Both are stainless steel, and both use a simple friction fit or corner screws to hold position. The spec that matters most is the outside flue tile dimension: standard caps fit nominal 8×8 and 13×13 flues, but older Fort Worth homes in areas like Fairmount and Ryan Place often have odd-dimension flues that require a custom lid ordered to size.
HeatShield caps are OEM. You can buy a generic aftermarket cap for less, but in our experience the metallurgy is inconsistent, and a cap that warps in two North Texas summers costs more in the long run. We stock HeatShield caps on the truck because they fit what they say they fit, and because we can warranty the install when we control the part. If your cap is a HeatShield and you want it matched, check for the stamped model number on the underside of the lid. No stamp means it’s an older run, and we’ll measure the flue on site before ordering.
We also carry caps from DuraFlex and Gelco for repair situations where the customer wants a mid-grade alternative. But for HeatShield-for-HeatShield replacement, we install the HeatShield lid.

Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water stains on the ceiling near the chimney chase. This is the number one call we get in Fort Worth after spring storms. The cap base has lifted or the seal has cracked, and rainwater is tracking down along the flue into the framing.
- Rust-colored streaks down the chimney exterior. The cap itself is corroding, and runoff is staining the brick or siding. Once the stainless has pitted, the cap is done, and no amount of wire brushing brings it back.
- Chimney odor that gets worse after rain. A cracked or missing cap lets water pool on the smoke shelf. That water mixes with old creosote, and the smell pushes down into the living room. It’s not a ventilation problem. It’s a water problem.
- Birds or squirrels in the flue. The cap mesh is torn or the cap is gone entirely, and an animal has moved in. We have pulled everything from grackle nests to half a squirrel skeleton out of open flues in Fort Worth.
- Loose metal you can hear from inside. On windy days, a failing cap knocks against the flue tile. If you hear a metallic clanking near the chimney chase, the base screws have likely corroded out.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Fort Worth, a standard HeatShield chimney cap replacement runs $275 – $425 installed. At the low end, that’s a standard 8×8 slip-in lid with easy roof access and the old cap turning off without a fight. At the high end, you’re looking at a custom-dimension flue, a rust-seized base we have to cut, or roof pitch that requires staging. We give you a written price before any work starts, and the number on the invoice is the number you approved. No ladder surprises.
Every cap install includes removal of the old cap, inspection of the flue tile and crown for water damage we may need to flag, new cap fitment, mechanical attachment, and a seal check. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it fails within a year, we return and fix it at no charge. That promise is written on every repair invoice.
DIY or Call Us?
If your chimney is a single-story with a walkable pitch under 6/12 and you have a proper extension ladder, replacing a slip-in cap is within reach of a careful homeowner. What we warn against: roof work on a Fort Worth summer day, because composite shingles get soft and the heat wears you down faster than you think. Most failed DIY cap jobs we see are simple measurement errors. The homeowner bought a 13×13 cap for an 8×8 flue because they measured the crown, not the tile.
There is also the matter of what a cap install reveals. A loose cap is sometimes just a loose cap. But often the crown underneath is cracked, the flue tile is spalling, and the problem was never the cap alone. If you call us at (682) 255-2144, we’ll give you a straight answer on what’s failing and what can wait. Hank’s standing rule on every roof in Fort Worth: “If it is not clean and it is not safe, we are not done.”
FAQs
A HeatShield stainless cap should last 12 – 15 years in North Texas weather, but the seal at the base wears out sooner, especially on the south-facing side of the chimney where UV cooks the sealant. Plan on a cap inspection every 2 – 3 years. Call (682) 255-2144 and we’ll take a look for free as part of any sweep.
If the lid is solid and only the mesh or the fasteners are gone, yes, sometimes. If the lid is rusting through or warped, no, a repair is a waste of money. We’ll tell you straight, with photos from the roof so you can see it yourself.
Most single-flue cap replacements are done in 45 – 90 minutes from setup to cleanup. Custom top-mount caps that require a template and order take 2 – 3 weeks to arrive, then about two hours on site.
We stock the standard 8×8 and 13×13 HeatShield slip-in caps on the truck, plus stainless top-mount options. Odd-dimension flues are ordered and installed on a return trip. Call (682) 255-2144 for a same-week appointment in most Fort Worth neighborhoods.
