Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Famco Chimney Cap Installation: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Famco chimney caps throughout Fort Worth, with most cap replacements running $295 – $485 installed depending on flue size and roof access. Most Famco cap jobs are done in a single visit, and we carry common sizes on the truck. The typical call starts the same way: a homeowner notices rust streaks down the chimney chase, hears a loose metal rattle during spring windstorms, or finds pieces of a deteriorated cap sitting in the firebox after a storm.
Fort Worth owners with Famco caps usually find us after the cap has been up there for eight to twelve years. Hail, UV exposure, and the freeze-thaw cycles we get in January and February do a number on galvanized and even stainless caps. The mesh screen fails first, the hood rusts through at the seams, and then birds start getting in. We cover all of it below.
Which Famco Models This Applies To
Famco makes a broad line of caps under a few different series names, and Fort Worth homes tend to have one of three: the FB series (bolt-on, fits most standard single-flue clay tile), the TP series (top-pull, for multi-flue applications), or a Famco custom cap sized to a specific masonry crown. The gotcha we see regularly: Famco caps are sized by inside flue dimension, not outside tile dimension, so a cap that looks right at the hardware store can be off by half an inch. That half inch is the difference between a cap that seats and a cap that rattles.
If the original Famco cap is still partially intact, we can usually match it from a photo or by taking measurements on site. If it’s gone entirely, we measure the flue opening directly. For OEM-versus-aftermarket: Famco builds a genuinely solid cap, but there are quality aftermarket equivalents in the same gauge steel that save $60 – $90. We’ll tell you when that’s the right call and when it isn’t. Flint Chimney Co Fort Worth is an independent chimney service provider, not affiliated with Famco, but we’ve installed enough of their caps to know which sizes and series are still actively made and which ones are only available as new-old-stock.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust streaks running down the chimney crown or chase. This is the galvanized base ring or hood losing its zinc coating. Once it starts, the cap has maybe two to three seasons left in Fort Worth’s wet springs before pinholes open up.
- Loose cap that bangs in high wind. The mounting bolts have backed out or the concrete anchor has spalled. A loose cap grinds against the flue tile with every gust, and that friction wears the tile edge over time.
- Birds, squirrels, or bees getting into the flue. The mesh screen has torn or pulled away from the frame. Famco’s standard screen is 3/4-inch galvanized mesh, and once a squirrel chews an opening, the whole screen needs replacing.
- Water pooling in the firebox after rain. The cap’s hood has rusted through or the base plate is no longer sealed against the crown. This is the failure that starts damaging the damper and firebox floor.
- Debris falling into the fireplace when you open the damper. Chunks of the cap itself are breaking off, or the cap has shifted enough to let leaves and roof grit through. If you see this, the cap is done and the flue needs a full inspection.

- Crown repair or remortar work if the existing base is failing: add $150 – $300

You get a written price before any work begins, and the number you approve is the number you pay. If crown work is needed, we’ll show you photos from the roof before we touch a single brick.
DIY or Call Us?
This is not a spring-loaded garage door part, but it’s still not a job we recommend doing off a big-box store ladder. You’re working at roofline height, often on a pitched surface, carrying a sharp-edged metal cap. One wrong step while threading a bolt is a broken wrist or worse. What you can absolutely do safely is ground-level inspection: look for rust streaks from the ground with binoculars, listen for rattling in wind, check the firebox for debris after storms. That tells you what’s failing. It doesn’t get the cap swapped safely.
Most homeowners we meet in Fort Worth have already done the research and know exactly which Famco cap they have. The part they’re missing is a clean install and someone who will stand behind it. That’s us. Call (682) 255-2144 and we’ll give you a written quote, usually the same call.
FAQs
A Famco cap in our climate typically lasts 8 to 12 years. Galvanized caps go sooner, stainless goes longer, but Fort Worth hail and the annual freeze-thaw cycle shorten every cap’s lifespan. We’ve pulled galvanized Famco caps off Mission-style chimneys in the Fairmount Historic District that were rusted through at year six. Stainless versions on the same block held for eleven.
Sometimes, but less often than most owners hope. A torn mesh screen can be re-screened, and loose mounting bolts can be re-torqued. But once the hood or base ring has rust-through, patching it with sealant buys you a season at most. We’ll tell you plainly if a repair is worth doing, and we’ll show you the photos so you’re not taking our word blind. Call (682) 255-2144 and we can look at it this week.
The physical swap takes 45 to 90 minutes once we’re on the roof. Total visit time including setup, removal, installation, sealing, and a flue camera check runs about two hours. If crown repair is needed, that’s a separate hour and we’ll tell you before anything starts.
We stock common Famco FB-series sizes and standard multi-flue caps on the truck, so most Fort Worth jobs are done first visit with no return trip. If your chimney needs a custom size, we order it and schedule the install the same week it arrives. We also work with caps from DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco, so if Famco doesn’t make the exact size you need, we’ve got alternatives.
If it is not clean and it is not safe, we are not done. Hank Delano and the Flint Chimney Co Fort Worth crew follow that on every cap install. Call (682) 255-2144 for a free estimate and a written price before we start.
